Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods visited Calhoun County Schools.

Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods visited Calhoun County Schools to present the esteemed "Literacy Leaders" banner, celebrating the school’s remarkable achievement in literacy growth for 6th-grade students.  These are the current 7th graders. This prestigious distinction, awarded by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), recognizes schools that demonstrate exceptional academic success and improvement in either high achievement or substantial growth.

To qualify for the Literacy Leaders honor, schools needed to meet one of two rigorous criteria set by the GaDOE:

  1. High Achievement: 90% or more of students had to score proficient or above on the Georgia Milestones assessment.
  2. Growth: Schools had to demonstrate at least a 15% increase in the number of students reading at or above grade level OR a 15% increase in students scoring proficient or higher in tested math subjects.

Calhoun County Middle School earned the Literacy Leaders banner for Growth by achieving a 23% increase in the number of 6th-grade students reading at or above grade level, far surpassing the state’s growth requirement. This remarkable improvement underscores the school’s commitment to literacy and academic excellence, thanks to the combined efforts of students, teachers, and community supporters.

Calhoun County Superintendent Pam Quimbley expressed her pride in the school’s accomplishment, saying, “We are immensely proud of the progress our students are making. Every success, no matter how big or small, reflects their hard work, dedication, and the support they receive from our teachers, administrators, parents, and community. Growth goes beyond grades and test scores; it’s about fostering confidence, resilience, a love for learning, and, above all, building a brighter future.”

The Literacy Leaders banner stands as a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit within Calhoun County Middle School and the entire district, shining a light on their mission to support every student's pathway to success. Congratulations to the students, educators, and staff of Calhoun County Middle School on this well-deserved recognition!
